Location and Area of the Okinawa Islands The Okinawa islands are in a line in the southernmost area in Japan. The Okinawa Islands are located at latitude 24°02´ to27°51´N and from the westernmost island of Okinawa, longitude is 122°26´to131°19´E. The islands are spread widely in the sea, and the sea area is as large as the area from the Tohoku to Chugoku district. Also, Okinawa prefecture is famous for its distant islands in Japan. There are 150 islands which have an area greater than 1ha and 42 out of the 150 islands are uninhabited. The total area is 2,263.32 square kilometer which is as large as Kanagawa prefecture.
