Okinawa has been referred to as "the
island of song and dance." Okinawan
song and dance has been deeply rooted in
everyday life of the people in Okinawa and
a visit to Okinawa will provide you with
many chances to see the people enjoying these
songs and dances.
At wedding banquets, guests go on stage and
dance "kachashi" to celebrate the
newly married couple. In high school programs,
students dress up in Eisa costumes, attracting
many people, and display their powerful dance.
One can also hear Okinawan music being used
as background music at parties, in the park,
on the radio, and on television programs.
At the present, Ryukyu music has been gaining
popularity and has been producing different
types of songs. As long as young Okinawans
follow the lead of their ancestors, treasuring
this cultural aspect, Okinawan song and dance
will live in the lives of the Okinawan people
forever! |
