Would you like to be automatically notified by email of events posted on the OIU Foreign Language Center calendar? Join the Cafe LaTE mailing list, and you can receive email reminders of calendar events. This mailing list is provided as a free service by the OIU FLC. How do I sign up? Just enter your email address into one of the sign up boxes at the bottom of this page, and click the [Join eGroups!] button. When you click the [Join eGroups!] button, your request for membership is mailed to the eGroup manager for approval. (This step is a precaution designed to protect your privacy by preventing someone else from using your email address to sign up for the group.) If you are not already an eGroups member, you will then be taken to the eGroups sign up page. Once you become an eGroups member, you can then join any of the thousands of available eGroups.	You must sign up for the eGroup within 30 days of sending your request. If you do not, your request will expire, and you will then have to send a new subscription request. The Cafe LaTE mailing list utilizes a free Internet service called eGroups (a subsidiary of Yahoo). Logging in to eGroups is just like logging in to your email box. To access the eGroup, you need a Username and a Password. Most email services use the first part of your email address as your username, but eGroups uses your whole email address as your username. eGroups will also send you an initial password. You may continue to use the password that eGroups sends you, or you can change your password at any time. But don't forget to write down your password. If you forget your password, you will not be able to enter the eGroup. When you log in to eGroups, a link to the Cafe LaTE eGroup will appear in your MyGroups list (the page you see after logging in to eGroups). Just click the Cafe LaTE link to enter Cafe LaTE.
The Cafe LaTE eGroup is more than just a mailing list... The Cafe LaTE eGroup offers the following free services: The essentials:

eGroups comes with its own calendar, and any member can add events to the calendar. Just add your event, and the Cafe LaTE automatic email reminder service will send out an announcement of your event to all members on the date you designate. There are many other things you can do in the eGroup in addition to receiving email reminders ... The eGroup also has a message board. You can use the message board to carry on discussions on various topics with other members of the eGroup. You can choose to read these discussions online, or you can have all messages in the discussions sent to you everyday by email. Using the message board, you can send a message to all other eGroup members at once. You can also send private email messages to any other group member. The eGroup also has its own (English/Romaji only) chat room. Only Cafe LaTE eGroup members can enter the chat room, so you always know who you are chatting with.	In the shared Links section of the eGroup you can post links to other home pages which you think would be of interest to other members. Then, other members just click your link to visit that page. The eGroup also comes with 20mb of free file storage space. In the Files section you can upload, lesson plans, class materials, photos, or any other kind of file which you want to share with others. Other members can then copy your files at any time. The Polls section of the eGroup makes it easy to take a survey of the other group members. Use the Polls section to survey the opinions of the other members on any topic you like. (Of course, you are never required to reply to a survey if you choose not to.) Finally, there is even a Database section in the eGroup where you can create data lists such as name and address lists, or lists of email addresses.
All of these features are easy to use, even for people just getting started with computers.

p.s. The Cafe LaTE eGroup is Multilingual The Cafe LaTE eGroup is not limited to one language. You can access the eGroup and communicate with other members using several different languages. Online help is available in five languages: English, Japanese, Spanish, French, and German (more coming soon). It is easy to access our eGroup using English menus, or Japanese, or any of a number of other languages.
