In today's rapidly developing advanced information-oriented society, learning how to process information and skillfully use computers has become absolutely essential. At Okinawa International University, we have striven to make improvements in our computer-related facilities, so that students can receive hands-on training in basic skills, including business applications (such as word processors, spreadsheets, and data-base systems), numerical computation and other programming, business and economic data analysis, and how to use the Internet.
Correctly processing and utilizing information
To survive in today's information society, one must have the ability to process and utilize information correctly. With the spread of information processing equipment, everyone is now expected to be able to operate a personal computer. It is desirable-and in fact, easier-to acquire a proper grounding in information technology while one is still young and adaptable.
Students that can respond to the challenges of a new age
In order to produce graduates with the comprehensive knowledge needed to respond to the challenges of this new age, Okinawa International University offers numerous computer-related classes.
OKIU has eleven computer labs (both small and large) with 590 computer terminals, running on WindowsXP and other operating systems. These classrooms are used for computer training classes, but students are free to use them when classes are not in session. We are now planning an upgrade of our system and software.
The classroom computers, faculty computers, and office computers are all connected to the university's LAN (local area network), which in turn is connected to the off-campus network. From any computer terminal connected to the network, one can use diverse services, such as conducting Internet searches or exchanging e-mail with those on or off campus. In addition, we have been conducting experimental multimedia classes with universities throughout Japan and with our overseas sister universities. We encourage all students to put our facilities to full use in order to acquire high-level information processing skills.
