The History of OKIU

A university that reflects the history of Okinawa

Okinawa International University was established when International University, its parent institution, which was established when Okinawa was under US military rule, was combined with part of Okinawa University. Since its establishment in 1972, the year that Okinawa was returned to Japan, OKIU has shared the history of Okinawa and the local community.

1972

2.24 Approval obtained for establishment of Okinawa International University
2.25 Okinawa International University established as an incorporated educational institution

5.15 OKIU becomes a university as stipulated in the School Education Law, according to the provisions of the Okinawa Reversion Special Measures Law
