◆Language Peers Program

The Language Peers Program matches students with partners who meet their language goals and needs, regardless of nationality, school year, or department.
Started in 2018, the program has many international student participants, many of whom teach their native language in exchange for being taught Japanese.
International students who want a partner to support them in their Japanese studies, or who want to have some positive interaction with their Japanese classmates, should participate in the Language Peers Program.

◆Preparation Classes for Language Certification Exams

The Center also offers test preparation classes for various language certification exams. The classes are free to any currently enrolled OKIU student. Current classes include exam preparation classes for nine different languages, including Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, and English. Classes to prepare for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) are held every year, so international students who want to pass are encouraged to take these free classes.

◆Speech Contests

Each year, the Center sponsors on-campus speech contests in six different languages: English, Korean, Chinese, French, Japanese (as a foreign language), and Ryukyuan. Most international students participate in the annual Japanese Speech Contest to demonstrate the results of their  Japanese study.

◆Language Camps

During the language camps, students stay at OKIU’s Higashi Village Seminar House for a few days immersed in the language they are studying.
Camp activities include group study, skits, games, cooking, and generally having loads of fun. Language camps currently include Chinese, French, Korean, English, and German camps. Students from all years and departments can participate, so the camps are a great way to make new friends, while also improving your language skills.

CALL classrooms

CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) is a computerized language learning system that provides an optimal environment for individualized instruction and self-study. The university also provides an LMS (Learning Management System) for off-campus learning. OKIU has four CALL  classrooms, which are equipped with a total of 204 computers (including 4 computers for the visually impaired) for the purpose of learning foreign languages, including English, German, French, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Japanese. The CALL classrooms are mainly used for classes,  but students can also use the classrooms for self-study at their own pace.
